So I asked on my Facebook page last week what would you like to read about next in my blog and I got a huge response requesting my favourite brushes. I am a massive brush fan - some people like to use there fingers to apply makeup, some only use a one or two brushes but me.... well I have one for everything. Obviously I have a full makeup brush belt that is bursting at the seems with every type (and price) of brush for work but these are the ones I use everyday to apply my own makeup. And because I use so many I have broken it down into 2 separate blogs... This one is all about my base brushes and the next one will be my favourite eye & concealer brushes. Hope you enjoy!!! I have tested so many brushes over the past 15 years but these are definitely my all time favourite. There are so many different brushes out there it can be difficult to know what to use. My collection consists of some highend brushes but mainly more affordable brands such as Real Techniques (which I love because they were designed by makeup artists Sam & Nic Chapman) and Blank Canvas which is a brilliant Irish company. Anyhoo on to the brushes!!!! The first two I use for applying foundation and both of them I have bought in the 18 months. First up is the Hot Pink F20 Flat Buffer Brush (HD Face Collection) from Blank Canvas. I picked these up at the last beauty show and have used pretty much nothing else to apply my own and my clients foundation since. This can be used with all liquid, cream and powder products and has the softest bristles of any brush I have used. I simply buff the foundation all over my skin and it leaves me with a beautiful flawless HD finish. And the best bit...Not only is it made by an Irish company but it only costs €13. Bargain for such an amazing brush. Check out their website here http://www.blankcanvascosmetics.com My other favourite foundation brush is this Stipple Brush from E.L.F cosmetics. I have had this for about 18 months and use it when I want a airbrushed finish to my makeup. To explain it a little better I generally use this for tinted moisturiser or lighter foundations such as my Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum. My "No Makeup" makeup days!!! And like the Blank Cosmetics brush above it washes brilliantly, never sheds its bristles and dries perfectly back into it's original shape. I got it on iHerb.com for an AMAZING €2.58. Check out the website http://www.iherb.com. For powder, bronzer and blush I use both of these brushes equally (which ever my hands lands on first). The top picture is the Real Techniques Blush Brush. This have a beautiful tapered head and super soft bristles. It washes brilliantly and I have 3 of these in my kit. It is a great all rounder brush. You can pick them up in pharmacies nationwide and it costs €12.99 The second one is from Lancome and I have had this since I worked in my first full time job back in 2000. I don't think they make it anymore but I still had to include it in my all time favourites. It has lasted the test of time even after all the washing and years of use - it just goes to show that if you pay for quality it will last you a lifetime. Another fairly new brush to my collection is the Blank Canvas F15 Small Tapered Brush. This is THE PERFECT brush for contouring as it fits beautifully into the hollows of your cheeks and I also use it for selective powdering i.e. under the eyes, around the nose etc. I don't know what I done without it. It is available from Blank Canvas and is €13.99 Actually before my Blank Canvas F15 I used the MAC 168. This is a beautiful angled contour brush and I still use it most days for apply blush/contour. It is available from all MAC stores for €37.50. So that's pretty much it for my foundation/powder/contour/blush brushes. Stay tuned for my next blog which will be all about my favourite eye & concealer brushes.
Until next time...Be Happy!!!! Susie xxx

God it seems like I have a lot of favourites this year but in my defense I discovered quite a few new brands in the past 12 months. If I had to choose a favourite standout brand it would the Charlotte Tilbury range. Her shadows are beautifully pigmented and super blendable and I am completely in love with her contour palette. If you follow me on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram then you will probably have seen me post some of these already but stay tuned because I will give you a little more detail on each product. So here goes in not particular order: Foundations have pretty much stayed the same as last year. No matter what other bases I have in my kit I always seem to return to the Estee Lauder Double Wear for its coverage and staying power. And for everyday beautiful glowy healthy skin I alternate between Bourjois Healthy Mix, Healthy Mix Serum or Happy Lights. I have been using the Dior Star foundation since mid December but I want to try it out for a while longer before giving a full review on it. In my never ending quest to find a concealer to cover my dark circles I happened upon two this year. At one of our ITWBN meet ups this year the lovely Siobhan from Dreaming in Sequins (http://www.dreaminginsequins.com) told me about the Maybelline Eraser Eye concealer. I use it everyday, it lasts brilliantly and doesn't sit in my fine line. The second one is Clarins Instant Concealer. This is such a beautiful creamy concealer that covers my dark circles perfectly. It instantly brightens the under eye area, doesn't flake and lasts all day. As I mentioned above I love the Charlotte Tilbury range and this is such a super product. It's the Colour Chameleon in Amber Haze. I use it for a quick all over colour when I am in a rush or as a eye shadow base if I want a more intense longlasting look. I also love the Charlotte Tilbury eye shadow palette in Dolce Vita and have pretty much used it everyday since I got it. The Maybelline Brow Satin has been a real stand out product for me in 2014. I always used shadow and an angled brush to fill in my brows but I picked this up on impulse in my local pharmacy one day and it has been a staple in my bag ever since. It has a waxy pencil at one end perfect for filling in and shaping your brows and the other end has a finely milled powder to set them in place. And it's a steal at only €8.99 I love love love mascaras and am always trying out new one. There was 2 stand out ones for me this year. For volume, length and curl it has to be the Maybelline Colossal Go Extreme Leather Black. This gives big bold lashes perfect for night time. And for definition and length it has to be Seventeen Falsifeye HD Mascara. It doesn't clump or flake and I cannot believe it is only €8.89 I love to contour but not the extreme like Kim K and mostly just use a matte bronzer. However since discovering The Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow it has become my number one product of 2014. Not because of the pretty packaging or the famous name attached to it but because it is the perfect contouring kit for me. The Bronze shade in the CT palette is a gorgeous warm colour which won't leave you looking tangoed or ashy. Perfect for pale Irish skin and because the powder is really fine you can build up the intensity to suit you without it looking too heavy. The highlight is a beautiful golden champagne colour and leaves a fabulous satiny sheen on the skin which is very flattering on all skintones. I generally keep my blush fairly simply and love both of these colours. MAC Warm Soul is the most beautiful warm peachy colour that suits every skin tone. It gives a sheer wash of colour to the skin and is THE perfect everyday shade. If I had to choose a drugstore brand of the year then it would definitely be NYX. There blushes are amazing with my favourite been Mauve (weird name). This is a soft natural warm pinky colour and leaves a lovely glow to the skin. A perfect every day shade. Over the past 12 months I haven't really had a stand out lipstick. I have however been loving the NYX Butter Glosses. These Butter Glosses are creamy, highly pigmented and comfortable to wear leaving you semi-opaque colour coverage that last well throughout the day. The Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector is the the perfect mix of a balm, tint and a gloss all rolled into one. I have the shade Rosewood but will definitely be adding more of these to my collection. It is basically your lips but better in one little tube. So that's it - My 2014 favourites.
Let me know in the comments below what was your stand out products from last year. Until next time...Be Happy!!! Susie xxx Happy New Year everyone!!!. Did you all miss me? I took a break from blogging over the Christmas simply to wind down and enjoy the holidays with my family & friends and let me tell you I had a ball. Of course I ate and drank far too much but it was all worth it. I hope you all had a fantastic time also and that Santa was very good!!! I love reading other people's blogs and watching YouTube videos on what people got for Christmas so I thought for my first blog of 2015 I would share with you what I received. (Disclaimer: I'm not trying to show off here peeps. I am very grateful for all the gifts I got. I simply love reading these type of blogs (cause I'm so nosy) and I hope you do too so if you get easily offended then stop reading now). I was very lucky this year and not only received one but two bottles of Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede perfume thanks to my bestie Annmarie & my fab hubbie Paul. This has been on my wish list for ages and I fell madly in love the first time I smelt it. It's quite a difficult fragrance to describe so maybe I will just do a separate blog post reviewing it. I have a weird obsession with stationary especially notebooks and diaries so what thrilled to get these from my friends at work. The red one is a beautiful notebook which I am currently using for my blog ideas and the floral one is a brilliant diary. It has recipes, room for notes, contacts, Christmas card lists and of course a full calendar. Love Love Love them!!!! Thanks Shona & Ev. Another gift from my hubbie was this brilliant Makeup Case. I have one already but its a little battered so I promised to take much better care of this one. It has 6 drawers, loads of side pockets and loads of room at the top for all your makeup/nail/beauty products. At home we do Secret Santa and this year my brother John was buying for me. He was super with the gifts and got my 2 tickets to go and see the Coronas in February and of course no Christmas would be complete without a voucher for Brown Thomas. Most amazing makeup range of 2014 has to be Charlotte Tilbury. My sister Breda and bestest cousin Sinead both got me eyeshadow palettes from the range. Breda got me The Vintage Vamp (on the right) whilst Sinead got me The Dolce Vita (on the left). I love them both so much. The shadows are so easy to apply and blending is a dream. I will definitely be adding more of these to my kit. I got a new bit of bling for my Mi Moneda chain. Another gift I got two of!!!! People know me so well!!! I think the every house in Ireland received a coffee machine this year. They are hugely popular and I love mine. Oh I gave the second one to my brother and his girlfriend because they just had a new baby so will need plenty of coffee for the sleepless nights :-) I got this gorgeous jewellery holder from another friend of mine. It is so pretty - I actually had it full of Lindt Lindor chocolates all Christmas but alas they are all gone now. Michael Kors must have made a fortune this Christmas!!! Everyone I met out over Christmas had a bag, purse or some piece of jewellery from the designer. His stuff is fabulous though. I got this beautiful black purse from my husband to match my shoulder bag. Love! We do Secret Santa at work also and I was buying this No7 in the Black Friday sales so my work SS bought it for me as my present. I love it. One side is a standard mirror whilst the other side is a 5x magnification mirror. Great for tweezing!!! It lights up also and you can tilt the top to get the perfect angle. My last gift is from another Secret Santa group. We have a cousins Viber chat and decided to do SS for the fun as we had arranged to meet up for a girly night out over the Christmas. I happened to get my sister and she bought me this gorgeous Charlotte Tilbury makeup bag. Cheers Bridie you are just the best. So you can see I wasn't exaggerating when I said I was pretty spoilt this year with presents. A huge thank you to my family and friends for everything. You are simply amazing and I love you all very much.
Until next time Be Happy! Susie xxx I added a few new lipsticks from MAC to my collection during the week. I always seem to have loads of purples, reds and nudes however my pink department was a little shook. It was so hard to choose but I finally narrowed it down to these four. First up is No Faux Pas. I love the packaging...It is in a gorgeous sparkly black bullet. No Faux Pas is a bright, fuchsia-red "hot pink" with a matte finish. It has a beautiful creamy consistency and applies smoothly without tugging the lips. Unlike alot of matte lipsticks this one wasn't too drying and wears well throughtout the day. Next up is Lickable. This isn't too unlike No Faux Pas - it is a bright blue-based fuchsia pick but this has a Cremesheen finish with a more opaque coverage. It is really comfortable to wear and has a gorgeous natural sheen. Fusion Pink is a beautiful pinky coral red. It is from their amplified range, is very creamy and wears well. And last but not least is Lovelorn. This is a blue based pink but doesn't look "cool" on the lips. It has quite a natural rosy shade and perfect for everyday wear. Before I buy a new high end foundation I do alot of research and this one has been on my wish list for ages. It is the Diorskin Star and I'm hooked already. Star is marketed as a "studio makeup, spectacular brightening with weightless perfection". And it delivers on all of this. The coverage is medium to buildable but feels featherlight on the skin. It lasts throughout the day with minimum touching up required and as it is dubbed as the "selfie" foundation it photographs beautifully. Amal Alamuddin (Mrs George Clooney to you and me) wore this on her wedding day and I think you will all agree how gorgeous she looked. It costs €48 for 30mls and is available in Brown Thomas. Until next time...Be Happy
Susie xxx Rimmel's latest offering is the Provocalips 16Hr Kiss Proof Lip Colour. I have been using this for the last week and must say overall I'm impressed. This is a double-sided lipstick with a vibrant intense liquid lipstick on one end and a clear top coat which seals the product on the lips. You apply the coloured side first. It glides on beautifully and dries quickly then apply a layer of the clear sealer. It feels just like a regular lipstick at this stage however as the day wears on it can feel a little dry but nothing that isn't sorted with a swipe of the sealer or indeed any regular lip balm. It wasn't as smooth on the lip as I had hoped - maybe because my lips where a little chapped but this is only a teeny tiny issue as the staying power well surpasses the problem. There are 8 shades in total including a gorgeous bright pink "Little Minx" and a beautiful deep red "Play with Fire". I am wearing shade 730 "Make Your Move" which is a great everyday colors. They are available in pharmacies nationwide for €8.99.
Get one (or two) now whilst stocks last as these are a must have for the upcoming party season!!! Until next time...Be Happy! Susie xxx So I have done 3 weeks at Slimming World and it's still going well. After my initial 7lb weight loss in week one I knew week two wouldn't be anywhere as good. Plus the fact I was out in Galway on the Saturday and the night ended with me in Supermacs!!!!! And then on the Sunday we had our #ITWBN meetup in the gorgeous Glenlo Abbey where they served us amazing little cakes and burgers and chips and little cheese tarts...Oh you get the picture. I was very good for the other 5 days though and had my meals planned out in advance so I wouldn't be tempted by convenience foods or takeaways. So I hopped on the scales and had 1lbs off. Not so bad. I was very good for the other 5 days though and had my meals planned out in advance so I wouldn't be tempted by convenience foods or takeaways. So I started Week 3 with an 8lb loss and wasn't feeling hungry at all. Again I had my meals all planned out and had plenty of food pre-prepared like soup, curry & bolognese. When I am cooking meals I always make extra and freeze it so there is always something quick and tasty available. I was away on Saturday night for my Dad's 60th Birthday in Westport. We had dinner and of course a few little bevvies but I wasn't worried as I just used my Syn's. I think if you are good 80% of the time you can afford to be a little bit bad the other 20%. At weigh in on Wednesday I was expecting to have another pound or maybe two off. So you can imagine my delight when I hopped on the scales and had 3 and a half off. Whoop Whoop. Thank God the next two weekends are quite for me so hopefully I will have a full stone off before my Christmas party on the 6th December.
Oh and for those of you who asked I posted my Chicken Curry recipe late last week. Here is the link. (http://makeupbyrubysue.weebly.com/blog/slimming-world-my-journey-chicken-vegetable-curry-recipe). If you want the recipe for my Bolognese or Soup just let me know in the comments below or on Facebook. Until next time Susie xxx So the internet has been going crazy lately over Kylie Jenner and her amped up lips. Everyone and their mother want to know did she get filler injections or is it simply down to some makeup trickery. Well according to the lady herself it is the latter. She simply uses MAC Whirl lip pencil to overline and fill in her lips and MAC Faux lipstick over that. And since liner is back for this season she is also bang on trend (well I wouldn't expect anything else). AnyWho! I decided to give it a try for myself. I have small lips and my top lip completely disappears when I smile - my sister Bridie thinks this is hilarious and says I must save a fortune on lip products as I only need to apply gloss to my bottom lip... I'm not laughing Bridie!!! I didn't have MAC Whirl so I used MAC Soar Lip Pencil instead. Tip No. 1 - Apply a little Lip Balm to your lips as the liner can be very drying on its own. Tip No. 2 - Take your time. You don't want to end up looking like the Joker. Tip No. 3 - You don't need to use a MAC lipliner. You can pick up great lip pencils from any of the "drugstore" makeup stands. NYX have a fab pencil called Mauve which is a great dupe for MAC Whirl. Just pick a shade near your own lip colour or with a mauve tone if you want it more like Kylies's. Tip No. 4 - Pull in close to a mirror. Rest your arm on something if possible. This will keep your hand nice and steady. Tip No. 5 - Start with slow mini strokes. Don't try and draw one full line as it's nearly impossible to get it even. Tip No. 6 - I like to start at my cupid's bow and fill that in first. I outline my "own" lip first then I slowly start to build up over that until I get a shape I'm happy with. Remember to use small circular movements to keep the line from looking too harsh. It takes just a little bit of practice but it's very easy to get the hang of. And simply using liner is brilliant as it has longer staying power than lipstick and gloss. So what do you think?
I love them and will definitely be wearing this look a lot more. Until next time...Be Happy Susie xxx So I got loads of requests for the Chicken Curry Recipe from my last blog. Easy to make and super filling this is a great way of upping your daily intake of vegetable also. It is completely Slimming World Friendly and if you are following The Paleo plan I have included substitutes for certain ingredients (They will be marked Paleo.) IngredientsLow calorie cooking spray - (Paleo use 1 teaspoon of Coconut oil) 1 Large Onion (Red or White) peeled and finely chopped 3 Gloves of Garlic ( I love Garlic but if you aren't a fan simply leave it out or reduce it down). 2 heaped teaspoons of Curry Powder (mild, medium or hot - that's up to you) 4 Chicken Breasts (chopped into chunks) 2 Carrots peeled and chopped 1 red pepper chopped A handful of mushrooms washed and chopped Half a head of cauliflower chopped Pineapple (Fresh, chopped) optional 250mls chicken stock 1 tin of chopped tomatoes Fat Free Natural Yogurt (Paleo use 1 tin of coconut milk) Method
And that's it. This is one of my favourite recipes and is so simple to make. I am not a big fan of veg but when it is hidden in the curry I don't mind it. (I'm like a child).
So what do you think? Let me know in the comments below! Until Next Time...Be Happy Susie xxx Well I'm back on the "trying to lose weight wagon" and decided to retry Slimming World as I found it easy the first time I went. Now I am not following the plan exactly to a T because of what I have learnt from doing a Whole 30 earlier this year. What is a Whole 30 you ask? Well basically I reset my system by having no sugar, dairy, grains, beans or alcohol for 30 days. I lost a total of 16lbs, my skin, hair & nails were never as good, I was sleeping better and overall I felt brilliant. However it is not something that you can keep up the whole time and of course I went back to my old ways with a bang. You can read my Whole 30 journey here (http://makeupbyrubysue.weebly.com/whole-30) I love going to a class and having weekly weigh in so I don't lose motivation and I know the Slimming World group in my town are lovely so decided to restart with them last week. The Slimming World diet is super easy to follow...you can basically eat everything, there is no calories or point counting and you won't feel hungry. Like a Whole 30 you need to plan your meals in advance and cook everything fresh from scratch. So off I went with my mum last Wednesday. I always find Week 1 easy as I am so motivated and eager to start and with Slimming World you don't have to cut out any food group. Basically they have a list of FREE FOODS you can eat including all fruit & veg (yes even potatoes), rice, pasta, meat (with all visible fat trimmed off), and then you choose from a healthy "a" option and a healthy "b" option. Healthy "a" is your breads, crackers, cereals etc and Healthy "b" is your diary e.g milk, cheese, yogurt etc. So basically if you have cereal in the morning with milk you cannot have bread or cheese that same day without using your syns ( you have 15 syns per day). That's it in a nutshell (Slimming World would probably kill me for wording it like that!!!!) If you have any questions please feel free to leave me a comment or message me on Facebook. Breakfast: Mornings are easy because I love Porridge and Weetabix. (I don't eat any other cereal because they are full of sugar even Special K & Corn Flakes!) Now from my Whole 30 days I still use Almond Milk, throw in a little fruit and a sprinkle of Linwoods Flaxseed, Sunflower, Pumpkin & Sesame Seed with Goji Berries. This is full of good fats, omega 3, Vitamins B, E & D as well as Iron, Protein & Zinc. (This is not strictly SW approved though). Other options are a full Irish (Yes A Full Irish - rashers, eggs, grilled tomato, mushrooms & fried potatoes) Yogurt & Fruit, Mixed Berry Pancakes and Eggs Benedict. Lunch: I love making soup. My favourite is Butternut Squash and Smokey Bacon or Tomato & Basil. If you make these yourself they are 100% free on SW and are also Whole 30 approved. I also had a Baked Potato smothered in Beans, a Spanish Omlette and a Chargrilled Chicken Spinach & Pasta Salad. Dinner: This is super easy as you can just make healthy versions of your normal meals. My favourite is Spaghetti Bolognese. I just make my own Bolognese sauce which it 100 times nicer than any jar of processed crap. Another favourite is Chicken Curry with chunky Chips. Again I make my own curry sauce & chips and wallah you have a healthy dinner. Also on this weeks menu was Steak, Shepards Pie and Chicken wrapped in Bacon. I stuck to plenty of herbal teas and water and allowed myself 1 coffee per day. For a treat I had 80% dark chocolate. I was very strict with myself and had no alcohol or takeaways. And because I was very strict with myself it paid on on
Wednesday when I went to weigh in . I had 7lbs off and was delighted with myself. So for week two I am going to pretty much stick with what I done for week 1. If you want to ask me any questions or would like some recipes just let me know in the comments below. I will continue to keep you updated as I go along ( yes even on the bad weeks). Also let me know if any of you are following Slimming World or Weight Watchers or any other type of diet and we can help and support each other along. Until next time...Chat soon! Susie xxx Fact: Cold weather = Dull Grey Complexion. Air conditioning, biting winds, hot showers and low temperatures are just some of the elements our poor little mug has to deal with in winter. Our skin becomes dehydrated which slows down skin cell turn over and our circulation also slows down which leads to lacklustre skin. So what can we do to combat this I hear you ask? Well firstly we need to work from the inside out. 1. Increase your water rich foods (tomatoes, watermelon, lettuce, broccoli etc) - this is better than just drinking water alone 2. Drink more fluids (no not alcohol!!! well some maybe..it is nearly Christmas after all!!!) What I actually mean is herbal teas such as lemon, honey & ginger or Chai, Water, Fruit Juice etc 3. Eat more food which contain Omega 3 (Flaxseed, Walnuts, Salmon, Herring, Sardines etc) or take a good supplement such as Eskimo Oil Omega 3 Liquid. Ok so that's a great start now we can work on the outside. 1. Cleanse: Start and finish your day with a cream or oil cleanser as they generally contain less stripping agents than gels. I love the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser. It is rich and creamy and quickly removes makeup and daily grim whilst leaving the skin clean and soft. To remove any heavy eye makeup I use the Garnier Express 2 in 1 eye makeup remover. It contains Arginine which helps care for your lashes and removes even waterproof mascara and liner without leaving a greasy residue. 2. Exfoliate: I use the Clarins Gentle Exfoliator Brightening Toner. This is a toner and exfoliator in one and unlike most toners (which I think are mainly flowery water) this one actually works. It contains glycolic, tartaric and salicylic acid which exfoliates and brightens the complexion and smooths the skin. It is super gentle so can be used daily however Clarins recommend once or twice a week. Perfect for removing dead skin cells. 3. Treat: I have been using a serum just over a year after falling in love with Clarins Double Serum. What is a serum though and why do you need to add it to your skincare routine? Well basically a Serum will treat or cure problems such as dehydration, ageing, acne and sun damage. They are absorbed quicker and deeper by your skin and are more potent than your moisturiser. I am currently using the Lush Full of Grace Bar which is deeply moisturising. It is packed full of skin feeding oils and Portobello mushrooms which are full of skin protecting vitamins and minerals. I just warm it between my hands and apply to my face at night. 4. Moisturise: In winter your skin may need a richer cream or balm instead of a light lotion. You still need SPF so make sure your moisturiser or foundation contain one. I am currently coming to the end of the Vichy LiftActiv Day cream and Night Cream. This is a little too "old" for my skin but I love the texture of both creams. My makeup just glides on over the day cream and the night cream is rich without been greasy. They are perfect for anyone 40+ who is worried about wrinkles and lack of firmness. However I will be changing to something more suitable for my skin once I have finished both. For an eye cream I am currently using the Clinique All About Eyes which is a beautiful moisture rich cream. When your skin is dehydrated the fine lines around your eyes become more noticeable first. So it is very important to keep this delicate skin well hydrated. 5. Masks: Again it is all about the hydration. And you are probably sick of me raving about the Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque. It is packed full of vitamins A, C & E which help to repair damaged skin, antioxidants to help stressed ageing skin and botanicals which leave your skin plumped, fresh and glowing with health. However I got a sample of the Vichy Aqualia Thermal Night Spa last week and tried it out. It feels as light as air and my skin just drank it up. I applied a good layer of it to my skin before going to bed and sleep in it. In the morning my skin was plump and glowing. So I think I will be investing in a little jar of this! So that's it for now. I hope you enjoyed reading this...Let me know in the comments below if you would like me to do another blog on Winter Skincare Tips for Skin/Body/Lips.
